Description:  Also known as “Cuban pepper”, the Cubanelle is a variety of sweet pepper commonly used in Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican cuisine. Many cooks prefer it to bell types. Sweet Cubanelle peppers can some times be slightly hot, but with only a touch of heat. This 6-8-inch pepper is prized for its sweet, mild flesh, rich flavor, and pretty colors. The thin-walled pepper is especially suited for quick cooking and has a low water content. Best picked when yellow-green for use in roasting, stuffing, as a pizza topping, for frying, a substitute for Anaheim peppers, or in a yellow mole sauce, and is one of the traditional ingredients in sofrito. They can also be left to mature and harvested when bright orange-red. In the garden, in addition to their famed taste and colors, the Cubanelle peppers are also known for their unique, imperfectly curled, wrinkled, and twisted shapes–no two seem to ever be alike.

Description:  Two-foot, stocky plants are covered in 6- to 7-inch, broadly wedgeshaped pods that ripen from green to deep, rich red. These peppers are incredibly fragrant and tasty. When you throw half a dozen on your grill, everybody in your neighborhood will smell them! These thick-fleshed traditional peppers are roasted on flat metal stoves, peeled, then ground into a traditional relish called ajvar, which is eaten spread on bread, often with sirenje, a local cheese similar to feta. Nearly every rural household puts up a supply of ajvar for winter eating. In autumn, North Macedonians flock to the markets in fertile valleys in the east to buy bushels of the best aromatic roasting peppers from the local villages. The original seed was a gift from the students in the villages of Kalugeritsa and Zleovo.

Description:  Pronounced (cho-dee-share-dow) A sweet frying pepper that is a traditional variety of the Basque people. This super rare and delicious pepper can be found growing across Europe’s Basque country; it is a key ingredient in Biscaya sauce and other delicious regional recipes. The thin-skinned, totally sweet peppers are traditionally strung into garlands and hung for later rehydration and use and can also be ground into paprika. Also excellent for fresh use, we love them raw in salads or blistered on the grill. This particular strain was brought to Boise, Idaho, over 50 years ago by Ben Goihiadia. We received the seed from Peaceful Belly Farms. In the early 1900s many Basques emigrated to Idaho for sheep herding jobs, and now Boise is a “little Basque country” of sorts.

Description: A Peruvian treasure that was collected in Chacas, Peru, by the late pepper historian Jean Andrews. This landrace traces its ancestry to cucumbers brought from Spain in the 1500s. It’s also known as Pepino Criollo Chacasino or Ancashino. It has been carefully selected for its resistance to pests and mildew. Grown in the cool climate of the high Andes, this cucumber is especially suited to cooler parts of the U.S. and will remain productive all season if grown on trellises. Description:  Stunning jade-colored flesh and unmatched sweet flavor make this a superb snacking cucumber. A popular cucumber from northern China, it grows well both in the garden and in the greenhouse. The crop is believed to have been brought from western China to the east during the Han dynasty in 216 A.D. Cucumbers have long been selected and perfected in China for sweet, nutty gourmet flavor. This variety is an homage to those many years of natural breeding; the long, slender, thin-skinned fruit will develop without pollination, making a seedless and burpless cuke. In Chinese medicine the cucumber is used as a natural refrigerant in the intense heat of summer; the cooling effect is said to soothe heat-related ailments! A favorite in our trials; we just love the flavor and gemstone-colored flesh!
